Job Description

TITLE: Bus Aide/Monitor PAY GRADE: Classified Salary Schedule FLSA: Non-Exempt SUPERVISOR: Transportation Supervisor TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 173 days per year. Works on-site according to designated schedule.

SUMMARY: The Bus Aide assists in the safe and pleasant transportation of students whose IEP calls for an aide on the bus.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High School Diploma or equivalent required. Must be able to administer first aid/CPR. Must meet the requirements established in Federal Regulations, currently, two years of college coursework, or pass the Paraprofessional Assessment. Will be required to meet Level I Paraprofessional Standards prior to first day of employment. Spanish language skills or bilingualism preferred but not required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (This list of essential duties is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by positions in this class. It does not imply that all positions within the class perform all of the duties listed, nor does it necessarily list all possible duties that may be assigned.) • Ensures the safety and well-being of children being transported to and from the program and on field trips on vehicles used by the program, including but not limited to: o Helping children board the bus safely, including helping teachers prepare for departure (putting on coats and assuring that each child has his/her own belongings); o Assuring that the bus driver is not distracted from the safe operation of the vehicle; o Helping children safely get off the bus and into the custody (only) of those individuals authorized to receive them; and o Retrieving any fallen objects during the bus ride. • Follows and ensures mandated child restraint devise procedures, ensuring children are properly positioned and restrained as listed in the IEP. • Will attend mandatory training(s) provided by the school nurse should health needs are a concern. • Engages in activity that is safe and appropriate for a moving vehicle; and consistent with Developmentally Appropriate Practices to make the trip pleasant and comfortable. • In the event of an accident or emergency, assures the safe evacuation of children and adults passengers (following the Bus Evacuation Plan) and assists in assuring that all passengers are transported to the nearest hospital or to their private physician, as per Medical/Accident Emergency Plan. • Assists in completing accident reports, when appropriate. • Reports any traffic violations incurred by the Bus Driver to the school administrator. • Attends all scheduled staff meetings, team meetings, and trainings, as requested. • Supervises sign-in and sign-out procedures. • Follows center's sick-child policy with regard to receiving children on the bus. • Gives parents any notes or written materials sent from the school and distributes notes from parents to the appropriate school staff. • Receives children's medicines from parents and returns them to parents. • Relays parents' questions, to the special education teacher. When asked may inform parents of any pertinent information about the child's bus ride or condition. • Assists in maintaining the interior of the vehicle in a clean and safe operating condition. • Assures that no child is ever left unsupervised on a bus. • Performs other duties, as may be assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively communicate in one-on-one and small group situations to parents, students, and other employees of the District. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables. Ability to interpret and implement a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to work in a friendly manner and to develop effective working relationships with students, staff and the school community. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all District requirements, Board of Education policies, and applicable State and Federal laws.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT: While performing the duties of this job, the employee constantly works inside a vehicle (more than 80% of the time). Occasionally works outdoors (less than 20% of the time), such as walking to/from school buses. Frequently maintains a stationary position. Frequently moves about, such as assisting students in boarding/deboarding school buses. Frequently operates a computer, computer printer, copy machine, phone, fax machine, or other related office equipment. Frequently communicates using various methods and tools, such as computers, paper, pens, radio, etc. Constantly communicates with students during the school transportation. Must be able to communicate rules and instructions effectively. Frequently communicates with parents and employees of the District. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations. Frequently ascends/descends stairs, such as in boarding/deboarding a school bus. Occasionally lifts, pushes, and/or moves up to 90 pounds, such as students or student equipment. Generally, the noise in the work environment is moderate to loud. Indoor (including inside vehicle) exposures include: student noise and music, possible communicable diseases, or unruly students. Outdoor exposures include: variable temperatures and weather conditions, dust, pesticides, exhaust fumes, and smoke (seasonally).
