ELEMENTARY SCHOOL COUNSELOR
Qualifications:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.
1. Master’s Degree in Guidance and Counseling from an accredited university.
2. Must hold a valid Idaho Pupil Personnel Services Certificate with a Standard Counselor K-12 endorsement.
3. Ability to work with students, staff, parents and the public.
4. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

Job Goals:
To assist students, in a confidential manner, whose school performance is being negatively impacted due to emotional, behavioral and/or social difficulties.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Assists students whose school performance is being negatively impacted due to emotional, behavioral or social concerns. Responsibilities in this area include:
a. Collecting information and data about students with specific needs.
b. Assessing student problems.
c. Providing input and recommendations to the Multi-disciplinary and IEP teams.
d. Consulting with parents, staff and/or community agencies.
e. Developing behavior improvement plans.
f. Providing individual or small group counseling.
g. Monitoring student progress and modifying interventions as needed.
2. Provides crisis intervention. Typical crises that may require counselor support are:
a. Student behavior problems requiring immediate intervention.
b. School related incidents that may have had an emotional impact on students or staff. (Examples may include the injury or death of a student or staff member, suicide attempts, bus accidents, school fires, etc.)
c. Parents who require immediate intervention or support.
d. Local or world events that have upset students and/or staff.
Child protection referrals.
3. Facilitates school success by providing small group or classroom instructions in areas such as:
a. Organizational and study skills.
b. Interpersonal skills.
c. Drug education and prevention.
d. Communication skills.
e. Preparation for junior high (transitioning).
f. Other areas as requested by parents and/or teachers and approved by the building administrator.
4. Assists incoming or outgoing students to make a transition from one school to another. Emphasis is given to the transition from elementary to junior high or middle school.
5. Serves as a member of the Multi-Disciplinary and Individual Educational Planning teams.
6. Provides information on the counseling and guidance services of the school to students, staff, parents and the community.
7. Provides other services as assigned. Examples may include coordination of conflict resolution programs, teaching parenting classes, serving on school or district committees.
8. Seeks out opportunities for professional growth.
9. Maintains high standards of ethical behavior and confidentiality of student information.
10. Has regular and predictable attendance.
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
Performs all other duties as assigned.
Terms of Employment:
An employee working in this position shall, at all times, be subject to the direction of the persons to whom said employee has primary responsibility or said person’s designee(s), and at all times shall be subject to the rules, regulations and policies of the District as promulgated by the Board of Trustees. Each employee shall be held responsible for having knowledge of said School District rules, regulations and policies.
This position will be up to eight (8) hours per day; up to 190 days per year. Work hours to be established by the Building Administrator. Salary placement to be determined by the Teacher Salary Schedule, as adopted by the Board of Trustees. All terms of employment may be subject to change, as recommended by administrative staff or as directed by the Board of Trustees.
Extra days may be required for this position. Extra day assignments are identified in the current year’s master contract.
Evaluation:
Performance of this position will be evaluated annually by the Building Administrator in accordance with provisions of the negotiated master agreement and board policy.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to have sufficient hand, arm and finger dexterity and talk or hear; stand; walk; and sit and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee may occasionally be required to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, but can at times be loud. The employee may occasionally be exposed to outdoor weather conditions.
