PARAPROFESSIONAL - BEHAVIOR SUPPORT SPECIALIST

Terms of Employment
Starting Pay Range: $17.00-$20.00/hr Depending on Experience and Training
Work Contract: Remaining School Days in 2024-25 School Year, 7.5 Hrs/Day

Position Summary
The Behavior Support Specialist will assist the licensed classroom teacher in implementing school programs and encouraging a positive learning environment, assist the teacher in academic assignments, social emotional learning components, classroom management, and/or materials preparation, and will assist in maintaining and facilitating a learning environment that supports the emotional, physical and intellectual development of each child. The position will provide support and deliver accommodations in the program for students, particularly those who exhibit identified behaviors.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Under the immediate direction of the Harmony Program Director, major responsibilities of the role include, but are not limited to:

Provide direct assistance to students to help them develop age appropriate academic skills;
Provide support for the development of social skills;
Implement behavior plans for individual students;
Work with small groups of students to improve academic and behavioral performance;
Provide appropriate behavior support for prevention and management of behavioral problems;
Interact regularly with teachers to clarify assignments, discuss student issues, and maintain dialogue about student’s progress;
Provide feedback to supervising teacher concerning student performance and behavior;
Carry out interventions designed by the school team;
Complete appropriate District forms related to severe behavioral problems;
Assist students in all school settings, including school grounds, lunchroom, hallway, parking lot and any other area that requires monitoring;
Maintain student and District confidentiality;
Perform all work duties and activities in accordance with District policies, procedures and safety practices;
Perform other related duties as required.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of:

Child development and the ability to learn and implement behavioral modification techniques;
Operation of classroom instructional equipment.

Ability to:

Follow written and oral instructions and observe District policies and procedures;
Demonstrate patience in working with students of varying abilities;
Prepare, maintain, and present required reports, records, and documentation;
Work effectively in a positive team setting with students of varied backgrounds and abilities;
Maintain a calm personal demeanor and remain focused in the learning environment;
Maintain student and District confidentiality;
Operate classroom and standard office equipment, including a personal computer using programs appropriate to assigned duties;
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, teachers and staff members, and other District personnel;
Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED equivalency;
Forty-eight (48) college credits, or an Associate’s Degree, or successful completion of the ETS paraprofessional Praxis preferred;
Strong verbal and oral communication skills;
Attention to detail, prioritization skills, and time management;
Valid Idaho identification;
Required criminal history background check and proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status.
